What Does It Cost to Install an EV Charger at Home?

Most home Level 2 EV charger installs in Rhode Island fall into a broad range, and the final number comes down to two things: how far the charger sits from your electrical panel, and whether your panel has room for the new circuit. A short run next to the panel is straightforward. A long cable run, or a panel that needs upgrading first, moves the price up.

A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, the same kind of power as an electric dryer, and it charges several times faster than a regular wall outlet. Plug in at night, leave with a full battery. The charger hardware is only part of the story, though. What you are really paying for is a safe, dedicated circuit run cleanly to where you park.

What actually drives the price

  • Distance from the panel. The farther the charger is from your panel, the more wire and labor the run takes. A charger on the garage wall right behind the panel is the cheapest case.
  • Whether your panel has room. If there is an open slot and enough capacity, we just add the circuit. If the panel is full or near its limit, it may need an upgrade first, which is the biggest single cost swing.
  • Indoor vs. outdoor. An outdoor or detached-garage install needs weather-rated equipment and sometimes a trench, which adds to the run.
  • The charger itself. You can supply your own or have us recommend one. Hardwired and plug-in units both work; the circuit is sized to match.

Can my panel handle an EV charger?

Often yes, but not always. An EV charger is a big continuous load, so a good electrician runs a load calculation on your panel before quoting. If there is capacity, adding the circuit is simple. If the panel is already near its limit, loading it up anyway is how you end up with tripping breakers or worse. In that case the honest answer is to upgrade the panel first, and we will tell you that up front rather than after.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Adding a 240-volt circuit for an EV charger requires a permit and inspection in Rhode Island. That is a good thing: permitted, licensed work keeps the install safe, keeps your homeowner's insurance valid, and keeps you eligible for any rebate programs that require professional installation. We handle the permit and the inspection as part of the job.
